Distance Education Philosophy


The following guideline was created to support the development of a district wide philosophy for distance education.

Definition:

  • Distance education refers to an educational experience where an instructor and/or students are participating in a class from a remote site.
  • Another term for distance education would be remote learning.
  • Remote learning could be synchronous (real time) or asynchronous (delayed).
  • Distance education could include any of the following:
    • Two way video/audio interactive sessions. (TVDEC consortium)
    • One way video/audio (Satellite - Net 2)
    • Web based classes

Standards supported through distance education:

  • Speaking
    • 1.2.1 By the end of the first grade, students will speak in clear, complete, coherent sentences using standard English.
    • 4.3.2 By the end of the fourth grade, students will make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and information to be conveyed.
    • 8.3.2 By the end of the eighth grade, students will make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and information to be conveyed.
    • 12.3.2 By the end of the twelfth grade, students will make oral presentations that demonstrate appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and information to be conveyed.
  • Listening
    • 1.3.1 By the end of the first grade, students will listen and be responsible members of the classroom.
    • 4.4.1 By the end of the fourth grade, students will gain information or complete tasks by listening.
    • 8.4.1 Apply listening skills in a variety of settings.
    • 8.4.2 Adapt and apply listening strategies to the setting.
    • 12.4.1 Apply listening skills for a variety of purposes.


Statement(s) of purpose for Distance Education - Goals:

  • All staff will be introduced to distance education through an inservice or workshop.
  • All K-12 students should be exposed to a remote learning experience
  • Any student planning to attend a post-secondary institution should take a minimum of one distance education class.
  • Distance education classes will be offered to other schools.
  • Technology support for enrichment opportunities will be provided for all K-12 students.
  • District planning team will attend quarterly TVDEC and/or state distance education meetings.
  • Community education programs presented over distance education will be promoted.
  • Distance education network will be used to receive staff inservice.
  • Educational meetings (ie conference, extra-curricular) will use the distance education network to save time and money.
