Preparing Yourself and Students for an Enrichment Activity

A one day Enrichment Activity can compare to taking your students to a school assembly. If you and your students are not prepared for that upcoming event, the intended results could be disappointing. In order to prepare both yourself and your students for your enrichment activity, follow these suggestions:

  1. Arrange to take your students into the distance learning room and you or someone else at your school demonstrate the distance education system:
    • Put the camera on each student so they might become comfortable with the system. (Remember to give them space - as a rule, try and have two people on at a time)
    • Equipment, demonstrate
      • teacher camera versus the student camera (this is for the regular distance learning classroom with 2 cameras)
      • zoom in/out
      • moving (pan and tilt) camera.
      • document camera
      • microphone
  2. Courtesies shown to presenter, students and teachers at other site, and those at your site:
    • Review common courtesies that should be shown to guests.
    • When asking a question at your site, raise your hand, and when identified state your first name and school site prior to asking the question. ie This is John from ESU 10
    • If asked a question, a student should give their first name and answer or if they wish not to answer, respond with "Pass".
  3. Preparing for the lesson (pre-lesson)
    • Students and teacher complete and review the pre-lesson.
    • When directed, send requested questions, works, etc to presenter.
    • Discuss questions and students should be prepared to ask those questions.
  4. Tele-lesson
    • Identify a student that will when asked introduce your school and the class they are taking.
    • Different students should be ready to ask questions of presenter.
    • When requested students answer questions. If they do not wish to answer, say "Pass".
  5. Post-lesson
    • As directly by the homeroom teacher, complete assigned post-lesson.
    • When requested, complete enrichment evaluation.
    • Acknowledgement to the presenter expressing appreciation for the presentation.

Evaluation Process

When the lesson is over, review it to help make future tele-learning more effective.  Consider videotaping the session and viewing it later, or jot down some notes when the session is completed.  Here are some questions to ask yourself, learners, and support staff-

*What were the intended outcomes of the lesson?  Were they achieved?
*Were expectations clear prior to the lesson?
*Was the lesson technically effective?
*What did you like/dislike about using the technology?
*What would have improved the lesson?
*What should be done differently next time?
*How did the experience compare to a more typical classroom experience?
