1. How can my school have access to Internet 2 (I2)?
Your school must have Network Nebraska as your internet service provider. As of this date, schools who are members of Project 42, Lincoln Public Schools, and Wayne State College and Wayne schools have I2 access.
2. How do I know if my computer connects to I2?
All computers within a school district who uses Network Nebraska are assigned an IP number from the district. All IP numbers from each participating school is assigned to the University of Nebraska's I2 pool.
3. Do I need to contact somebody if I want to use Internet 2?
No you do not. If you have the IP address or you connect to a site that is I2, your system will automatically connect over I2.
4. Can I connect over I2 to other schools in Nebraska?
No. All schools in Nebraska will use the Network Nebraska backbone to get to the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. The I2 connection does not begin until the Nebraska connection which is at Kansas City. The I2 connection is only outside of the state.
5. Do I need to do anything different if I want to connect to a site outside of the US?
No. All you will need is the IP number. The system will automatically route you into an I2 connection.
6. If I were to IChat or use AOL instant messaging as my video conferencing link, does it ride on I2 if the remote site is on I2?
Yes it would.
7. Are there any costs for this service?
For this year, each participating organization (ESU) is paying the University of Nebraska for bandwidth for Network Nebraska. The I2 service comes with that at no charge. The University will review this as the annual membership charge is $35,000 plus bandwidth charges for the connection between Lincoln and Kansas City.
8. Will the quality of the connection always be the same?
The I2 connection to Nebraska will always be good. The last mile connection which is from Network Nebraska to your site will be subject to the amount of bandwidth that has been purchased and is being used for regular internet traffic.
9. What is the biggest consideration to keep in mind when connecting outside of the US?
Time change and of course language that is spoken.
