Distance Education Learning Activities To Promote Interaction

Activity Title: The Light Bulb meets Mr. Bluebird

Materials:

  • Pencil
  • Paper

Directions:

  • Divide each site into 2 groups.
  • This is a forced relationship problem, have fun, and let your imaginations go.
  • You are going to have 3 minutes to brainstorm. Remember all answers are okay.
  • Select a recorder. The recorder is allowed to add to the list.
  • Question - How is a light bulb like a blue bird?
  • You have 3 minutes. Go
  • After 3 minutes - Stop.
  • The recorder at each site is to read the list. Zoom camera in on the recorder when they are talking.

Activity Title: Epiphanies of the Moment

Materials:

  • Pencil
  • Paper

Directions:

  • Divide each site into 2 groups.
  • On document projector, show the epiphanie of the moment
    • As I stared at the screen on my computer, I was suddenly transported to the magical realm of ...... or
    • As I looked at the picture in the magazine, it seemed to come alive and speak to me saying or
    • Make up your own
  • Alternate back and forth as the writing evolves
  • Zoom in on each person as they share their sentence.

Activity Title: Now Where Did I Put That Picture

Materials:

  • 9X12 blue paper
  • Dark marker or black crayon
  • Crayons
  • Markers

Directions:

  • Each person will work by themself.
  • You will be creating a scribble picture.
  • You will shut your eyes and scribble on the blue paper with a black crayon or marker. Don't scribble to long, just some nice ones.
  • When you are done, use crayons or markers to find a picture that relates to what you teach. Color that picture in. You will be sharing with each other at the other sites.
  • Scribble and then find the picture.
  • Share showing your picture at the document camera.


Activity Title: Radio

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Pencils

Directions:

  • Divide into 2 groups at each site
  • At each site, ask what kind of programs do you hear on the radio - get response from each site
  • Verbal response only.
  • Each site should now write something for the radio that is about distance learning
  • Select by using 'tongue depressers'.
  • Have the selected person share their radio item.


Activity Title: Ruler Magic/Problem Solving

Materials:

  • Ruler
  • Regular piece of white paper
  • Markers or pencils

Directions:

  • Work in pairs or triads
  • Your magical assignment is to design a picture using 15 lines.
  • At least 8 lines must be and even number measurement - ie 2" 4" etc.
  • Have fun drawing
  • Name your drawing.
  • Using the document camera, show your work.


Activity Title: Fantasy Math

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Markers or pencils

Directions:

  • Work in pairs or triads
  • I am going to read numbers that you need to add. I will only read them one time. They are - 274, 366, 728, 123, 244 (1735)
  • Now divide the answer by 5 (347)
  • Now write the answer using the name of the number (three hundred forty seven)
  • Group 1 add 25 (372)
  • Group 2 add 43 (390)
  • Group 3 add 96 (443)
  • Each site report your answer
  • Record each answer using a different marker color. (1205)
